What’s in This Book

BALMSMONTAGE-ccnut.jpg

Something for Every Skill Level

This book includes balms in a variety of textures, fragrances, and difficulty levels. You’ll find eight bespoke formulas that will cleanse, calm, warm, pamper, smooth, and soothe your skin.

Although some of the formulas are categorized as advanced, step by step instructions and loads of tips are included to help ensure a successful result - regardless of your level of experience.

There are several pages of detailed Notes & Tips by each formula that cover everything from ingredient-specific information to tips on use and storage as well as inspirational suggestions for substitutions.

Advanced equipment isn’t necessary to make any of the products in this book, but fair warning: you might be inspired to invest in a few tools.

Get Comfortable with Batch Calculation, Ratios, and Doing Numbers

If math isn’t your favorite part of making cosmetics, don’t panic. Included are some of my best calculation tips and shortcuts to help smooth the way.

Apart from a complete walk-through of the batch calculation process that includes conversion from percent to weight (in grams as well as ounces), the book features a handy guide on how to calculate batches for containers. Because batches are measured by weight and containers are sold by volume, it can be frustrating to know how much product to make for specific number of containers. The included charts and methods will help you plan ahead and eliminate any doubt about batch size.

If you work with herbs and botanicals, you have probably noticed how some herbs are much lighter and more voluminous than others. How does one take that into account when figuring out amounts for an oil infusion? Included in the book are step by step instructions on how to calculate the herb-to oil ratio using 2 different (and equally accurate) methods – regardless of how voluminous or dense the herbs are.

Also included is a Calculation Tips & Tricks page to help make ‘the math part’ of creating cosmetics more enjoyable.

Make Your Own Water-Free ‘Cream’

While developing the formula and method for this water-free ‘cream’, it became of my absolute favorite skincare products. Although there is no content of water, this balm is designed to feel and perform as closely to a cream as possible. The Mango Velvet Anhydrous ‘Cream’ is a beautifully multi-functional balm that feels like velvet, leaves your skin feeling like velvet, and can be used everywhere from face to feet.

The different infused oils that were tested in the development batches are listed in the book along with notes and tips on how you can customize this product to your preference.

Making your own infused oils gives you full control over every ingredient in your balms, whether you are creating a triple-herb combination for a calming ointment or a spicy all natural lip balm flavor. This book walks you through 4 processes for heat-infusing oils so you can choose and use whichever method suits you best.

This section is a full 24 pages that is richly illustrated, packed with tips on temperatures, straining methods, preparation, and much more.

If you are already used to making your own infused oils, you may find a useful tip or 2. If you’re new to making oil infusions, get ready to increase your know-how and expand your palette of ingredients to a world of new possibilities!
