Oil Infusion Solutions

Happy 2020! I hope you have had a lovely New Years Eve and are ready to rock a brand new decade!

During this month, I’ll be bringing you up to date on a few of the things I have been working on throughout 2019. One of these projects has been testing out different methods of oil infusion using heat. There are several ways to do this successfully and still capture the best of the plant material you want to infuse. Spoiler alert: there is no one best method for every plant/herb. (Wouldn’t life be just a bit too easy if that were so?)

Pictured above: an experiment in heat infusion using the sous vide method. This is a small batch of cinnamon sticks in sunflower oil. The object of this test was to extract as much taste and scent as possible. I did several batches - some with sticks and some with powdered herb. Conclusion: it is definitely possible to extract both taste and scent using this method with cinnamon.
