Good Formulation Practice - A New Tutorial

GMP-BLOG-1500.jpg

There’s a brand new tutorial going live and I’m thrilled to bits to share this with you!

‘Good Formulation Practice’ gives you an overview of how to get your artisan cosmetics-making workspace organized, sanitized, and set up with your own system of documentation.

So many have asked me about this over the years and I have been meaning to get busy putting something together for the longest time, so when Hana and Robert Tisserand asked me to create a tutorial about how to implement good manufacturing practice (GMP) in an artisan/home cosmetics/product making environment, they didn’t even have to finish the sentence before I said yes.

GMP isn’t Terribly Sexy, but it’s Very Necessary

GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice) can seem daunting, confusing, and raises all kinds of questions for many artisans:

  • Is it possible to make safe cosmetics in a home/artisan environment?

  • Is it OK to work in a kitchen?

  • How does one organize everything – especially when there isn’t enough space?

  • Sanitizing – what’s right? How much is enough? When is it too much?

  • Keeping track of things – how much documentation is needed?

  • What’s the best way to store everything?

  • What should one look for when buying equipment?

Spoiler alert: You don’t have to sterilize your home in order to make safe cosmetics. On the other hand, doing absolutely nothing may be a cause of failed batches.

The secret is knowing what to focus on.

This tutorial is designed to help you get a handle on setting up your own system so you can work smarter and more effectively.

The LisaLise Labs

My many years of working with botanical ingredients (coupled with frequent moving and working in less than ideal conditions) has taught me a few things about getting my own artisan space set up and functioning.

One of my ‘labs’ for almost 3 years was a compact, very vintage kitchen with limited space that doubled as the family kitchen. Every product I developed in that ‘lab’ passed assessment and was approved for sale in Europe – home of the world’s strictest cosmetics regulations.

Several of my clients (with similar workspace conditions) have also passed assessment and their products have been approved for sale in Europe.

So to answer that first question: yes, it’s doable to make safe cosmetics from an artisan environment!

Even More Challenging: GMP with Botanicals

The growing trend to work with botanicals and foods in cosmetics (which I have done for years) also kicks open the doors for all kinds of unwanted elements to enter both the workspace and the products made in them.

Whether it’s a small batch development formula or a generous sized batch of products for sale, knowing how to prepare the area for production is key to creating consistent quality and enjoying a successful outcome.

This tutorial is designed to include artisans of most levels: from enthusiastic newbies to practiced artisans who are making (and selling). I’ve included loads of helpful tips from my years of experience of working with challenging ingredients such as wildcrafted botanicals and fresh fruits and vegetables.

You’ll also gain an understanding of how to eliminate doubt about what might have gone wrong if a batch doesn’t turn out as expected.
